How many times have you heard that line during class? Too many right? Let's talk about how to find correct posture and clear some things up.
Start by standing in our neutral position (if you don't know what that is read the post Waltz Rise & Fall first). From our neutral position stand as tall as you can, look straight ahead, and squeeze your butt cheeks. Now we can't move too well while squeezing our butt cheeks so we're going to suck our belly button as close to our spine as we can. Once we've reached this point you can relax your butt as long as you keep your abs engaged through your belly button. Have we gotten to this point so far? Excellent! The last thing we need to do is imagine a nice, heavy suitcase in each hand pulling your shoulders down while a string attached to your sternum is pulling your chest up towards the ceiling. Memorize how your body feels right now so you can find this position again while you're dancing. Don't forget to look up and try adding this into each dance you try.
